Early Life and Voyages

Jacques Cartier was born in the seaport in Saint- Malo, France on December 31st 1491.Cartier got baptized at a very young age. His childhood wasn't that eventful. He grew up in France, and lived there all his life, except when he was on his voyages. He started exploring at the age of 19 years old. He sailed for France. He studied navigation in Dieppe, a major French center for navigators, after that he became a highly respected navigator. At the age of 29 he got married to Cathrine Des Granches in 1520, he got married in Canada at the St. Lawrence river. His first expedition started in 1534. The crew and him explored Newfoundland. The crew and Cartier wanted to discover the northwest passage and succsseeded. There route was around Newfoundland down around the Gulf of St. Lawrence back around Anticosti then up through the Strait of Belle Isle and up to France again. On Cartiers second voyage he traveled with a crew of 110 men and two natives. Finally they reached the St. Lawrence river, and it was the crews first time sailing up a river too. On this voyage they traveled up-river to what is now called Montreal in Canada. On this voyage he wanted to discover riches. On his last voyage he started in 1541 at the age of 50 and ended in 1542.On this trip he wanted to try to discover later sailing routes. This trip was much harder than the others. Thats because they used many ships and 1,000 people helped out with everything. After a while they got stuck on a island. One of his close friends Roberval came to rescue them. But they had to wait 3 months. While waiting the crew and him were trying to find treasure.
